“Three Days at Qurna” considers
the commodity of antiquity and the fakery of the ancient. The title refers to
the Egyptian village of Qurna, which was recently destroyed by Egyptian
authorities to provide a "cleaner and safer" environment for tourists
approaching the Valley of the Kings. The village was built atop and within a series of ancient tombs - used for dwellings, workshops, and (many years ago) sources of antiquities. For generations, many of the residents of
this village made their living by selling relics found literally beneath their homes. More recently, craftsmen in the village had
taken to making reproductions and fakes of ancient Egyptian artifacts.

During the 1970s and 1980s, a number of movie theaters
sprouted up along the edges of small towns in the Midwest – towns that were too
small for “suburbs”. These theaters were usually quite unremarkable utilitarian
structures, in concrete block or pre-fabricated steel. Before the widespread
appearance of cable television in the rural areas, and also before the
appearance of affordable home video, the places served as bunker-like outposts
for mainstream popular cinema. They were all together different than their
ancestral movie houses found in urban areas since the early twentieth century. They were also untethered from the pavement-and-box landscape of the
suburbs.

South of the main commercial district in St. Louis, a number of residential neighborhoods were developed along the Mississippi River during the second half of the nineteenth century. During the mid-twentieth century, several of these districts were labeled as slums by city officials. The neighborhoods were "redlined", making it nearly impossible for residents and business owners to insure their properties and causing the value of the buildings to plummet. Some of the residential districts were soon replaced by warehouses and light industry.
For decades, artists, their studios, and the galleries that
show their work have sought low-rent neighborhoods in the cities in which to
work. As a result, the vibrant, active communities that often follow have
served to revitalize dying sections of the urban landscape. In nearly all
cases, however, the long-term benefit is enjoyed by real estate developers who
convert neighborhoods “colonized” by art and artists into upscale residential
and retail spaces. The end result is most often the displacement of the very
people (and the ideas) that reshaped the districts, and the replacement of
locally-owned businesses with corporate outlets. The story is an old chestnut
now. The burned-out building becomes an art gallery, and then the art gallery
becomes a Starbucks.

After occupancy fell below 50%, artists were invited
into the big climate-controlled space, and suddenly, what was once The Foot
Locker was a dance studio, what was once Waldenbooks was a community theater,
and what was a jewelry store became the site of an installational sculpture. For a
couple of years, the mall was transformed by the eclectic – something not
generally seen in such environments. It couldn’t last, however. Within a few
years, the leases of art-tenants were terminated, and the big place was
emptied. Word has it the mall will return to its mid-twentieth century roots as
an outdoor strip mall.

were produced using sonic fragments from the zombi film genre of the late Cold

trilogy. “The First 15 Minutes of the Second Sequel” (2007) was composed of
processed fragments from the first 15 minutes of the second unauthorized
Italian sequel to Dawn of the Dead. Fake resurrection, left for dead and

So again, the focus of this little forum is on us in the
past tense, generally. The point of this is to gain a certain outsider’s
perspective on any number of our own practices, symbols, or traditions. The most common lens through which to
see this is the post-apocalyptic lens. However, there are other viewpoints, and

In art and media, the post-industrial is one such
perspective. This term (often used in music but also in painting, architecture,
and sculpture) is still a somewhat poorly defined one. Essentially, it can be read to
mean vocabularies that suggest traditions or practices that might follow our
own industrial / consumer age. Something from a proposed future, but stripped
of the conventions that we feel make us modern today. This is where the topic
becomes quite relevant to this blog.

Themes in post-industrial art often include the renaming of
past objects, the appropriation of symbols, the valuation of debris, the
hybridization of vocabularies, and often a new primitivism that might follow
the fall of industrial and consumer culture. Some of these premises are present
in post-apocalyptic culture, but in post-industrialism there is not necessarily
a presumed disastrous event or collapse. Just mutation, evolution, or fundamental paradigm
shift. Also a more probable future.

If you haven't yet heard it, "A Duck in a Tree" is a weekly internet radio show programmed by :Zoviet*France: and broadcast by Basic.fm. The show features some remarkable music, much of which you will have a hard time finding elsewhere. We are pleased to report that this week's edition includes an unreleased Fossil Aerosol track - a Duck in a Tree exclusive. Have a listen at Mixcloud.

If you haven't heard this kind of music before (but as a reader of this blog are interested in post-industrial or post-apocalyptic culture), you will probably find something of interest here. Much of the work is relevant for the simple fact that it often begins with the intentional collapsing of most forms of musical or cultural convention.
Irony is one of the core
attractions in the explorations of contemporary ruin and abandonment, such as those
found in this blog. However, those images and posts (as well as the books and
music promoted by Afterdays Media), may be reflections of the irony of another era.
I realized this today while reading Christy Wampole’s excellent essay in the
New York Times. How to Live Without Irony speaks with remarkable clarity and
insight into the sadly shallow, insincere, and rather corrosive stance that
irony has taken within Generation Y hipster culture since the 1990s.

Born at the dawn of
Generation X, I became culturally conscious during the early 1970s, and I see
now that I may have experienced an early form of “proto-irony” during the waning years of the Cold War. It was clearly of a different flavor than that described by Wampole. Our first
tastes of irony were wistful, self-reflective ones. Imagining of the end of us,
and the nature of our own ruins. And it wasn't hip. We were weird.

I wrote about this in my recent book about the
early years of the American zombie phenomena:

peculiar product of a peculiar time and place. In the audience, we recognized
something astonishingly relevant about colorful corpses decomposing in J.C.

The late 1970s and early

The widespread act of stepping out of
one's own pop culture to see it from another perspective. That sense of disassociation is crucial
to the kind of irony that is endemic in mainstream culture today. Always
self-referential. As Wampole puts it, today’s hipster is a “walking citation”.

But at the time, this
dislocated perspective was imposed upon our imaginations by, among other things, the popular
depictions of worldwide annihilation of one form or another. Dawn of the Dead was a good ironic laugh, perhaps one of the first of
its kind, but that irony was simply a sugarcoating atop a much more
contemplative and horrifying product in 1979:

we just could not shake. It’s different today. Most cultural memes now come
with a smirk, but I don’t remember smirking that much back then. What I do remember is the
ocean of self-realization that washed over us as those zombies tumbled down the
escalators. And I also remember the strange comfort we later found exploring dead shopping centers and drive-in theaters. It propelled me into the field of archaeology, and I cant help but think it made me a more cautious consumer.

darkened, mildewed space. Our hands sifted through a stainless steel bin filled

We do manage
to sketch some pretty remarkable outlines of past places, events and lifetimes.
And we can say a few things with a certain degree of authority. Some amazing
things, actually. But we are constantly on shaky ground, due to the natural
laws of decay and fragile memory. We must bridge the gaps of decomposition and
forgetting with certain assumptions, often based on Occam's Razor, which states that the simplest
explanation is usually the correct one.

This brings us
to the Umbrella Man, a short film by Errol Morris. On the surface, it is about a strange character seen
at the site of Kennedy’s assassination. But what it is really about is the potential for seemly nonsensical factors behind
any historical circumstance. Once you look too close - when you really attempt to read each detail - probability,
predictability, and Occam's Razor itself may fall apart. This perspective can
threaten to make a monkey out of any historical or archaeological study.

This cuts to
the heart of the theme of abandonment and decay present on this and so many
other blogs. The suggestions made by patina, and by the gulf between what happened
and what we bring to the remains of what happened. That is the fun part.

We have numerous and odd
relationships with our own recent past. And of course with liminal places of
decay and neglect. The little alleyway known as
“Extra Place” in the Lower East Side of Manhattan provides a good example.
Located just off the Bowery, the alley was in the heart of a pretty exotic
landscape during the 1970s. Plenty of urban decay, homelessness, empty lots,
empty buildings. Decline, blight, and the present becoming a crashed and
burning version of the recent past.

buzzed with artists, writers, and musicians living in unheated lofts,
pioneering an urban frontier. The alleyway, called Extra Place, ran behind a
little club called CBGB’s, now legendary for its role in the birth of the New
York punk scene of the mid-to-late 1970s. By 1975, CBGB’s had become a new
music incubator, clubhouse, and scene, surrounded by the very real grime and despair of the Bowery. Inside,
Television, The Ramones, and Patti Smith were developing something new on a
little stage in front of an audience of local artists and non-local visitors
interested in “slumming” for the evening.

peeing and puking alongside the homeless and mildly deranged. It represented a
picture-perfect backdrop of the decaying Mean Streets – so perfect it graced
the cover of the Ramones' album Rocket to Russia like a license for street cred. Bands booked in the
club often had their photos taken in the debris behind the bar – sitting on
burned out cars abandoned at the back of the dead end street. An apocalyptic
